Rage Against the Machine was a rock band from Los Angeles that formed in 1991. The band featured Zach de la Rocha on vocals, Tom Morello on guitar, Tim Commerford on bass and Brad Wilk on drums. It was known for its very liberal anti-corporate political views, which also featured heavily in the music's lyrical content. By combining hip-hop vocals with hard rock instrumentation, Rage Against the Machine pre-dated the rap-rock trend of the late 1990s by several years. They received much critical acclaim for their social awareness and activism.

The band's self-titled first album was immediately successful, and in 1993 they earned a prominent slot on the Lollapalooza festival tour. They had several popular music video hits on MTV, including "Bulls on Parade," "Renegades of Funk" and "Sleep Now in the Fire." Over the course of their nine-year career, Rage would tour constantly and release three official albums. Their political consciousness compelled them to frequently donate their concert earnings to charity.

Rage Against the Machine is arguably most known for an incident at the 2000 MTV VMAs during which a seemingly intoxicated Commerford protested Limp Bizket's victory by climbing a structure onstage and refusing to come down. Shortly afterward, the band broke up, although there have been numerous reunion projects and concert appearances. Morello, Wilk, and Commerford formed Audioslave with former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, in which they kept their hard edge while branching out into more melodic territory.
